Departments that I made my recommendation. In February 1903, if you recollect, Dr Clark went on leave, and I had to take double duty then. I had to arrange for the work of the Medical ɲepartment, and also the Sanitary

Department.

When you say the wedical Department, I presume you 16.249

mean the general Medical work of the whole of the Government Hospital, everything outside of the

Sanitary Department ?

Yes. You see Dr Clark was leaving on the 19th March 1903, and I had to make the necessary arrangements with

the different Kembers of the Department.

And why, Dr Atkinson, did you cease to be a Member?

What reason was there for not continuing to act as a

Member? Were you only locum tenens for someone?

I do not know at all.

It is rather important for what follows afterwards. 16254

I think the reason was that in this report which you refer to, Messrs Chadwick and Professor Simpson recunended that the P. C. M. 0. should be a Member of the Council, and the Government considered the matter, and they thought it would be most preferable for the
