I went across to it once with Dr Barnett, and Dr Macfarlane. He was there, but I had forgotten that he was there, but he tells me he was there. Mr Bryan was there, and a Chinese contractor, I think Poo Sik, alao, and there was what appeared to be a quarrel between Kr

as to Bryan and Mr Foo Sik, whether one trench was paid for or not. Although they were across on the other side of the small valley, we could distinctly hear that Mr Bryan hold he had already paid for the second trench, and Foo Sik held he had not been paid for it. I understood from Mr Bryan afterwards that they compromised by paying Foo

Sik half. It did not appear to me that a Chinese

contractor would allow himself to be done out of half

the pay he ought to have, and as a consequenos I

reported the matter in a few days to Dr Atkinson, and

as a matter of fact Dr Atkinson did his best to get Mr

Bryan invalided, but he did not succeed.

Were they speaking in Chinese or in English ? English

A: I dont think Mr Bryan speaks in Chinese.

You say you dont think a Chinaman would allow himself to

be put off with half pay, when he was entitled to whole?

A:- My idea was that the laying out of the cemetery was not

properly done. There did not appear to be any proper accounts kept, or a proper Survey, and somewhere about

to that time, there was a report

from Dr - memorandum

Atkinson informing me that the cemeteries were not properly laid out, but were done by rule of thumb.
