Sir,
I have laid before the Marquis of Salisbury your letter
of the 27th ultimo inclosing a copy of a further communica-
-tion from the War Office relative to the proposed
extension of the Boundaries of HongKong.
In reply to the enquiry contained in the last
paragraph of your letter, I am directed by His Loraship
to state for the information of Her Majesty's Secretary
"
of State for the Colonies, that, as soon as the questions
relating to the Burmah Convention are settled, a communic-
-ation will be addressed to the Chinese Government inquir-
-ing whether they will grant a perpetual lease to this
country of the territory required on payment of its value.
