HUNG KONG FUTURE GARRISON
170
(Previous Reference: 0.0.5.(46) 137th Mtg., Minute 17)
LORD MONTGOMERY said that he understood the question of the future garrison of Hong Kon was under examination by the Joint Planning; Staff. He emphasised that there wore no British troops available for a garrison in Hong Kong without withdrawing them from elsewhere. Не considered that the Commando Bride at present stationed in Hong Kong should be withiram to a place suitable for trainin: in co-operation with Naval and Air Units. He suggested therefore that consideration mi ht be given to the possibility of withdrawing the Commando Brigade to Malta and sending to Hon Kon the two Infantry Battalions at present at Malta to come under direct command of the Commander-in-Chief, Hon Kong. as a long term policy, he considered that it should be possible to garrison Hong Kong with some form of gendarmeric.
SIN RHODERICK MCGRIGOR said that the Admiralty would investigate the possibility of implementing this proposal.
In discussion, it was suggested that the Joint Planning Staff should carry out the examination t present in hand on the basis of the above proposal by the Chief of the Imperial General Starr.
THE COMMITTEE:
(a) Instructed the Joint Planning Staff to examine the
quontion of the futuro garrison of Hong Kong on the basis of the proposal by the Chief of the Imperial General Staff.
b) Took note that in anticipation of instructions, the
Joint Planning Staff had been invited to take into aoc unt in the preparation f a report on the future garrison Hong Kong, a telogram containing the views of the British Defence Committee in South East Aola n the need for assault landing craft for use in the defence of Hong Kong.
