FIGHTER FORGES.

10.

Under oxisting pl. for the deployant of British air forces in the Far East, one single-engined fighter squadron equipped with Spitfiro XIVS is located in Hong Kong. The Spitfire XTV is a first line fighter amed with 20m. carmon and two .5 machino-guns, it can also carry bombs, Its performance and, in particular, its initial rate of club make it eminently suitable for defence against the type of enemy air attack which is visualized. It is thorofare considered that this squadron, supplemented by Naval fighters, is sufficient to ensure reanomable security against air attack: by day. It is considered that provided the day fightor defence syston is maintained at a high dogroo of officiency, ameny losses in daylight attacks would probably force him to rusort to spasmodic night attacks on a small scalo. In consequence it is considor that an essential requirement for defonce against this forn of attack will be a force of modern night fighters equipped with airborne radar. This force need not be large and it is suggested that three night fighters equipped with airborne radar be made available as a detach.ent fra: the main night fighter forous in lalaya. This detachint to be reinforced nɛ occasion donando.

In order to obtain adequate fightor control, it is considered

that the minimum organization should be:-

(a)

(b)

(c)

(a)

A central fighter operations and filter room and two G. C. I. stations.

The fightor operations room should be the contral and co- ordinating authority for all R.A.F. and Naval fighters operating fran shore bases in the Colony.

Each G.C.I. station should control interceptions within its specified area, such interceptions should be co-ordinated through the fighter operations room.

Local Chisc citizens will be required to supplement the manning of the fighter operations room, filter room and G. 3. I. stations. These civilians should be trained by the R.F.

Navy and any liaison officers will be required to work in the fighter operations roon and maintain touch with Navy and Army Headquarters,

ANTI-AIRCRAFT DEFENCE.

It is suggested that the bulk of the anti-aircraft defores should be mobile. A very close liaison botwoon the rightor operations ro and the control of anti-aircraft fire is an essential requirement.
