Projected Development.

In

Stonecutters Island is a small narrow island lying E-W

just within the borders of the ceded territory of Hong Kong

about one mile West of Tai Kok Tsui. It is used at present

by the Royal Navy for a wireless station and an underground

ammunition store. No large scale survey map of it is avail-

able in the Colony and therefore any details as to contours

have had to be obtained from the attached 1:20,000 map.

order to provide a runway of sufficient length suitable for

all aircraft at present in use or foreseen it is proposed to

cut and fill the area marked and edged in brown in the accom-

panying map. This is a major engineering project, and in

order to obtain the necessary length of runway into the pre-

vailing direction of wind it will be necessary to extend the

line of runway to join with the mainland at Tai Kok Tsui. It

is estimated that the cut from Stonecutters Island itself

would be sufficient for filling the area immediately surround-

ing the island, but the filling required for the area between

the island and the mainland could be obtained from the ceded

part of the mainland.

Class of Runway Provided.

If the extension to the mainland as proposed is approved,

a runway which would conform to the International Standard

Class B Airport Specification could be made. Local tropical

conditions, with appropriate climatic corrections, call for a

paved strip 7770 feet long with an over-run of 1332 feet at

each end, and a width of 350 feet. The total length would

thus be 10,434 feet. This paved runway is shown green on the

map.
