Mr. Megson

I think that we should say that we should like to have an opportunity of referring any proposals to those who will be responsible for administration on the termination of the military period, before there is any commitment. I think that our position in the New Territories should also be made abundantly clear to the Sub-Committee, namely that these Territories are held on

a 99 year lease which has about another 40 or 50 years to run.

18 Feb.

I attended the meeting with

Mr. Wynne-Jones and Wing Commander Pyle.

Briefly, the recommendation was that the services and Cable and Wireless, Limited, would consult together with a view to ascertaining whether all the services required could be provided on the present Cable and Wireless site. This would leave the Hong Kong Government services in the same position as they were before the war, and Mr. Wynne-Jones was entirely satisfied. The Chairman remarked on the desirability of co- ordinating all wireless services in Hong Kong, and he fully appreciated that this could only be done in Hong Kong itself. The Hong Kong Government will not be committed in any way, and the Chairman's remarks were, I think, intended more for the services than for the civil administration.
