in inquiries and such rules may, in particular, provide for-

(a) the classification of witnesses:

(b) the payment of different rates of allowance

to different classes of witnesses; and

(c) the rate of allowance which may be paid to

witnesses in a particular class.

(2) The expenses of the allowances paid under such rules shall be met from moneys provided by the Legislative Council.

(3) In this section, "witness" means any person, other than a public officer, properly attending_an inquiry to give evidence, whether or not be gives evidence.".

An Ordinance to amend the Application of English Law

Ordinance.

[5th November, 1971]

Enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof.

This Ordinance may be cited as the Application of English Law (Amendment) Ordinance 1971.

2. Section 3 of the principal Ordinance is repealed and replaced by the following-

"Common law and

equity.

3. (1) The common law and the rules of equity shall be in force in Hong Kong—

(a) so far as they are applicable to the circum- stances of Hong Kong or its inhabitants;

(b) subject to such modifications as such cir-

cumstances may require;
