BUILDING (REFUSE CHUTES) Regulations, 1959.

In exercise of the powers conferred by section 26 of the Buildings Ordinance, 1955, the Governor in Council has made the following regulations-

1. These regulations may be cited as the Building (Refuse Chutes) Regulations, 1959, and shall come into operation on the 1st day of January, 1960.

2. In these regulations, save where the context otherwise requires-

"approved" means approved by the Building Authority;

"container chamber" means the chamber into which a refuse chute discharges and in which refuse containers, if provided, are placed; "hopper" means the fitment on a refuse chute into which refuse is

placed and from which it is projected into the chute;

"open air" has the meaning assigned to it by regulation 2 of the Building

(Planning) Regulations, 1956;

"refuse container" means a receptacle in which refuse from a refuse

chute may be stored.

3. (1) Every refuse chate shall

(a) save as provided in regulation 4, be vertical; and

(b) terminate at its lower level in a container chamber.

(2) The top of every refuse chute shall be not less than twelve inches above the top of the highest hopper.

(1) Save at the foot of any refuse chute, or above the level offsets in any of the highest hopper, no refuse chute shall have a bend or offset therein. (2) Where any refuse chute has an offset at the foot thereof, such offset shall-

(a) have a slope of not less than 60° to the horizontal; and

(b) be constructed of replaceable galvanized steel of not less than

6 The walls of every refuse chute shall be constructed of solid walls. brick or concrete, not less than four inches thick, exclusive of any lining.

(a) have an internal area of not less than seventy square inches:

(3) (a) The end of every such ventilating pipe shall be provided with a grating or grille having apertures of an aggregate area not less than the sectional area of the pipe.

(b) The least dimension of every such aperture shall be not more

(a) jointed in-

(i) cement mortar in the proportion of one volume of cement to one volume of sand; or

(ii) other approved material; and

(b) securely and solidly bedded into the walls of the chute.
