appears in the register together with, at the option of a candidate whose name does not appear in the register in Chinese, the Chinese version of such name and shall state the electoral number and place of residence of the candidate as these appear in the register and the description of the candidate.";

(b) by the deletion of paragraph (7) and the substitution

therefor of the following-

*(7) The returning officer shall permit any elector to inspect, at the place and time for delivery of nomination papers, any nomination paper delivered to the returning officer.

Regulation 8 of the principal regulations is amended by the deletion of the proviso thereof.

6. Regulation 9 of the principal regulations is amended-

by the deletion of paragraph (1) and the substitution therefor of the following-

(a)

"(1) The returning officer shall publish in the Gazette a notice of nominations in accordance with Form 8 of the Appendix not carlier than two days and not later than nine days after the last day for receipt of nomination papers.";

(b) by the deletion in sub-paragraphs (a) and (b) of para- graph (2) of the commas and words " if Chinese," and by the addition after the words "Chinese characters" of the following-

"if any".

Regulation 25 of the principal regulations is amended by the deletion in paragraph (2) of the word "shall" wherever it occurs and the substitution therefor of the following —

"may".

8. Regulation 29 of the principal regulations is amended by the deletion of paragraph (3).

Regulation 30 of the principal regulations is amended (a) by the addition after the words "polling agent" in para-

graph (1) of the following-

a candidate or an election agent''; and

(b) by the addition after the word "believe" in paragraph (1)

of the following-

**or if the presiding officer has reasonable cause to believe".

10. Regulation 31 of the principal regulations is rescinded and Rescission

and replaced by the following-

"Issue and marking of ballot papers.

31. (1) A ballot paper shall not be delivered to an regulation elector unless the elector produces to the presiding officer either his identity card or such other evidence as will satisfy the presiding officer that the elector is the person named in the register whom he claims to be.

(2) Immediately before delivery of a ballot paper to an elector-

(a) the ballot paper shall be marked with the

official mark, either embossed or perforated; (b) the number, name and address of the elector as stated in the copy of the register shall be called out;

(c) the number of the elector shall be marked on

the counterfoil; and

(d) a line shall be placed in the register against the number of the elector to denote that he has received a ballot paper, but without showing the particular ballot paper which he has re- ceived.".

11. Regulation 36 of the principal regulations is amended Amend- by the deletion of the words "instead of being put into the ballot ment of
