2. (1) In this Ordinance- "appellant" means a person who appeals in accordance with the provisions of section 16 of this Ordinance from a decision of the Director of Manpower refusing him consent to quit the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force, the Special Constabulary or the Essential Services Corps

"Assistant Director" means a person appointed as Assistan

Director of Manpower for the Colony "Director" means the person appointed as Director of Manpower

for the Colony;

"final notice" means a final notice issurd hy the Director of

Manpower in accordance with section 14 of this Ordinance; "medical notice" means a notice issued by the Director of

power in accordance with section 7 of this Ordinance; *medical practitioner" means a person registered in accordanc with the provisions of the Medical Registration Didinance 1935, and includes a person exempted from such registration by virtue of section 18 of that Ordinance; "objector" means a person who objects in accordance with section to to being called up for service by the Director of Manpower in the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force, the Special Constabulary or the Essential Services Corps; "provisional notice" means a written notice issued by the Director of Manpower in accordance with section g of this Ordinance "public interest" has the meaning assigned by regulation a of

the Emergency (Principal) Regulations, 1949; "recognized religious denomination" means one recognized as

such by the Governor in Council;

"the Compulsory Service Tribunal" means the tribunal colle

stituted by section IT of this Ordinance;

"the Essential Services Corps' means the Essential Services.

"the Fire Brigade" means the Fire Brigade as constituted under:

"the Hong Kong Police Force" means the Hong Kong Police Force as constituted under the Palice Force Ordinance, 1948, and also includes members of the Hong Kong Police Reserv Force constituted under the Hong Kong Police Reserve Force Ordinance, 1927;

the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force'' means the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force us constituted under the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force Ordinance, 1951;

the Special Constabulary" means the Special Constabulary as

(a) A person residing in the Colony shall be deemed to be ordinarily resident therein unless he falls within the exemption contained in paragraph (i) of section 5-

3. (1) The Governor may appoint by notification in the Appoint Gasette, by nanue or office, an officer to be Director of Manpower, and officers to be styled Assistant Directors of Manpower.

(2) The powers and discretions vested in the Director here under and duties required to be discharged by him may be cxercised by an Assistant Director.

(3) In relation to public officers, the powers of the Director under this Ordinance shall be exercised in accordance with arrangements approved by the Colonial Secretary.

4. 5. The following persons shall be exempted from the Exemption. provisions of this Part-

(c) members of His Majesty's Regular Naval, Military or

Air Forces and their wives;
