Schools invited to join management initiative scheme
All aided schools, including special schools, practical schools and skills. opportunity schools, are invited to join the sixth phase of the School Management Initiative (SMI) scheme which provides a management framework to help raise the standards of learning and teaching in schools.
A Senior Education Officer, Mr Andrew Poon, said today (Tuesday): "The SMI scheme enables schools to manage their administration and finances more flexibly and to encourage the participation of teachers, parents, students and alumni in the management of their own school.
"It was first introduced in 1991 and so far 222 schools have joined the scheme."
Mr Poon said the Block Grant provided under the SMI scheme gives schools more flexibility in the use of funds to purchase furniture and equipment to meet their own needs.
SMI schools are also given priority in joining the School Administration and Management System project. It provides schools with a networked computer system to assist in administration. The system also facilitates the electronic transmission of information between schools and the Education Department.
Other advantages included the application for an additional non-recurrent furniture and equipment grant and the discretion in setting aside not more than three days in a school year for teachers to take part in school-based staff development programmes and school planning work, Mr Poon said.
