JLG to meet in February

The 35th meeting of the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group will take place in Hong Kong on February 6, 7 and 9, 1996.

The British team will be led by the British Senior Representative, Mr Hugh Davies. The other members of the British team will be Mr Alan Paul (Counsellor, Office of the British Senior Representative, Sino-British Joint Liaison Group), Mr Nicholas Ng (Secretary for Constitutional Affairs, Hong Kong Government), Mr Robert Peirce (Political Adviser, Hong Kong Government), and Mr Sherard Cowper- Coles (Head of Hong Kong Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office).

Chief Justice's term of office extended

The Government announced today (Tuesday) that the service of the Chief Justice, Sir Ti Liang Yang, will be extended for eight months until February 28, 1997.

Sir Ti Liang, whose present term expires on June 29, was appointed Chief Justice of Hong Kong on March 15, 1988.

Born on June 30, 1929, in Shanghai, he was educated at Soochow University Law School, Shanghai, from 1946 to 1949. He continued his education in Hong Kong University and University College, London. He obtained his LL B (Hon) in 1953 and was called to the Bar in 1954.

Sir Ti Liang's career in the public service began with his appointment as a magistrate in 1956. He was appointed Senior Magistrate in 1963 and promoted to District Judge in 1968.

He was elevated to the High Court in 1975. In 1980, he was appointed Justice of Appeal, becoming Vice-President of that Court in 1987.
