Transcript of the Governor's media session

Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Governor, the Rt Hon Christopher Patten, to the media after opening an exhibition at St Paul's Convent School this (Thursday) afternoon:

Question: Mr Patten, just one question. There's been a lot of sayings about who's the candidate for the Chief Executive of the SAR. So what sort of... effect it will ...

Hong Kong?

Governor: Well, this is not a question for me. It's a question for the election committee. But I am sure that they would want to choose somebody as chief executive who is whole-heartedly dedicated to the interest of Hong Kong, to standing up for Hong Kong's autonomy and for Hong Kong's way of life. I am sure that they would want to choose somebody who understands Hong Kong and what has made Hong Kong successful and somebody who can command the loyalty of the civil service, the police and the whole community. You don't have to have a particular job in order to do that. But you have to be a particular sort of person. The only other thing I would say is that whoever does the job will, I am sure, recognise that it is one of the most difficult and important jobs in the world. That's not an exaggeration. But the whole world is going to be looking to see what happens in Hong Kong and how the chief executive does the job, whether it is a man or a woman. So it is difficult and it is challenging and I am sure whoever is asked to do the job will have the support and prayers of the whole community because whoever it is, everybody will want to do the job as well as possible.
