KAP SHUI MUN BRIDGE DECK CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

CONSTRUCTION

OF THE KAP SHUI MUN BRIDGE, PART OF CORE PROGRAMME, IS MOVING AHEAD RAPIDLY.

THE AIRPORT

IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS SINCE WORK STARTED ON SITE IN DECEMBER 1992, WORKERS ARE ALREADY BEGINNING TO CONSTRUCT THE 820-METRE-LONG BRIDGE DECK.

PROJECT DIRECTOR OF THE HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT'S LANTAU FIXED CROSSING PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE, MR K K C YEUNG, SAID TODAY (WEDNESDAY) THAT TWO OF THE 20 CONCRETE SEGMENTS WHICH WOULD FORM THE DECK FOR THE SIDE SPANS OF THE BRIDGE HAD ALREADY BEEN SUCCESSFULLY POSITIONED.

"THIS REPRESENTS A MAJOR MILESTONE IN THE PROJECT AS IT MARKS THE BEGINNING OF SUPERSTRUCTURE WORK FOR THE BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION, HE SAID.

MR YEUNG SAID ALMOST 30 PER CENT OF THE WORK ON THE KAP SHU1 MUN BRIDGE HAD BEEN FINISHED SO FAR AND THE BRIDGE WAS ON SCHEDULE FOR COMPLETION IN MID-1997.

"CONSTRUCTION OF THE TWO MAIN BRIDGE TOWERS ON LANTAU AND MA WAN

BEEN PROGRESSING SMOOTHLY, AND BOTH TOWERS ARE EXPECTED ΤΟ REACH THEIR FULL HEIGHT OF 150 METRES IN SPRING NEXT YEAR.

"DETAILED DESIGNS OF THE BRIDGE AND THE VIADUCT, WHICH HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN PARALLEL WITH PHYSICAL WORKS ON

SITE, ARE NOW SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE.

"THE 20 CONCRETE SEGMENTS, ALL PRECAST ON SJTE, ARE BEING POSITIONED FROM BOTH MA WAN AND LANTAU ENDS. THEY WILL FORM THE TWO SIDE SPANS OF THE BRIDGE DECK AND TWO SHORT SECTIONS OF THE MAIN SPAN NEAR THE TWIN TOWERS, HE SAID.

THE KAP SHUI MUN BRIDGE, AND A VIADUCT ACROSS THE MA WAN ISLAND, ARE BEING BUILT BY KUMAGAI-MAEDA-YOKOGAWA-HITACHI JOINT VENTURE UNDER A $1.6 BILLION DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT CONTRACT AWARDED BY THE HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT IN NOVEMBER 1992.

TRAFFIC,

THE CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE, CARRYING BOTH ROAD AND RAIL WILL SPAN THE CHANNEL BETWEEN THE ISLANDS OF MA WAN AND LANTAU.

TOGETHER WITH THE 2.2-KILOMETRE-LONG TSING MA SUSPENSION BRIDGE, IT WILL FORM PART OF THE LANTAU FIXED CROSSING ON THE 34- KILOMETRE-LONG HIGHWAYS NETWORK OF THE AIRPORT CORE PROGRAMME LINKING THE NEW AIRPORT AT CHEK LAP KOK AND THE TUNG CHUNG NEW TOWN TO URBAN KOWLOON AND HONG KONG.

A MAJOR PART OF THE 430-METRE-LONG MAIN SPAN OF THE KAP BRIDGE WILL BE FORMED BY PRECASTED SEGMENTS MADE OF STEEL
