THE GOVERNMENT IS ALSO SEEKING APPROVAL FROM FINANCE COMMITTEE FOR INCREASES TOTALLING $180 MILLION IN THREE PROJECT ESTIMATES FOR THE WEST KOWLOON RECLAMATION.

THE PROJECTS INVOLVE DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE WORKS, SITE INVESTIGATIONS, AND CONSULTANCY WORK.

THE INCREASES ARE NEEDED TO COVER COSTS INVOLVED IN THE COMPLEX PHASING OF RECLAMATION WORKS AND THE

OR REPROVISIONING EXTENSIVE WATERFRONT FACILITIES.

THE GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THIS DID NOT INVOLVE ANY INCREASE

WEST IN THE $12,798 MILLION OVERALL PROJECT ESTIMATE FOR THE

KOWLOON

RECLAMATION.

USE LESS PLASTIC BAGS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

THE FIRST TERRITORY-WIDE, ACTION-ORIENTED PLASTIC BAG REDUCTION PROGRAMME LED BY THE RETAIL INDUSTRY IS LAUNCHED TODAY

(SATURDAY).

THIRTY-ONE RETAILERS, COMPRISING SOME 1,400 RETAIL OUTLETS, WILL DEVISE THEIR OWN ACTION PLANS IN A YEAR-LONG CAMPAIGN TO ACHEIVE AT LEAST A 10 PER CENT REDUCTION IN THEIR USE OF PLASTIC BAGS.

AMONG THE INITIATIVES ARE THE DISPLAY OF CAMPAIGN LOGO, WHICH SHOWED ARROWS POINTING TO THE USE OF LESS PLASTIC BAGS, AND PUBLICITY MESSAGES AT PROMINENT PLACES, AND THE PROVISION OF STAFF TRAINING ON WAYS TO ECONOMISE ON THE USE OF PLASTIC BAGS.
