CONSULTATION ON CHARGING FOR CHEMICAL WASTE ENDS SOON

THE PUBLIC ARE REMINDED THAT CONSULTATION ON A PROPOSAL TO INTRODUCE A DIRECT CHARGING SCHEME FOR THE USE OF THE CHEMICAL WASTE TREATMENT FACILITY WILL END ON AUGUST 14 THIS YEAR.

PHASES FROM MID-1994.

THE PROPOSED SCHEME IS IN LINE WITH THE POLLUTER PAYS PRINCIPLE AND IS DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE WASTE MINIMISATION AND ADOPTION OF CLEANER PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES,

PUBLIC COMMENTS SHOULD BE SENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT DIVISION, PLANNING, ENVIRONMENT AND LANDS BRANCH, 20TH FLOOR, MURRAY BUILDING, GARDEN ROAD, HONG KONG, BEFORE THE END OF THE CONSULTATION ON AUGUST 14.

NEW GEOLOGICAL MAP PUBLISHED

ENGINEERING OFFICE (GEO) OF THE CIVIL DEPARTMENT HAS PUBLISHED A GEOLOGICAL MAP OF NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE TERRITORY.

THE MAP, OF 1:20 000 SCALE, SHOWS THE GEOLOGY OF BOTH ONSHORE AND OFFSHORE AREAS. IT IS THE 12TH IN A SERIES PRODUCED THE GEO AS A RESULT OF THE SYSTEMATIC GEOLOGICAL MAPPING OF THE TERRITORY UNDER A GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.

THE AREAS COVERED INCLUDE MUCH OF MIRS BAY WITH ITS NUMEROUS SCENIC ISLANDS, SUCH AS TAP MUN CHAU (GRASS ISLAND), CHEK CHAU (PORT ISLAND), WONG WAN CHAU (DOUBLE ISLAND), NGO MEI CHAU (CRESCENT ISLAND) AND KAT O CHAU (CROOKED ISLAND).

THE ISLANDS OF PING CHAU AND SHEK NGAU CHAU HAVE BREN INCLUDED AS INSETS FOR COMPLETENESS.

THE LARGELY UNDEVELOPED RECREATIONAL AREA COVERED BY THE MAP IS OF PARTICULAR GEOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE AND INTEREST.

THE STRIKING RED SANDSTONES THERE ARE NOT FOUND ELSEWHERE IN HONG KONG, OFFERING A SCENIC VIEW AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY THEIR SEDIMENTOLOGICAL FEATURES.

THE OLDEST AND YOUNGEST SEDIMENTARY ROCK UNITS IN THE TERRITORY CAN ALSO BE SEEN, FROM THE DEVONIAN SANDSTONES AND CONGLOMERATES OF THE BLUFF HEAD FORMATION ALONG THE NORTHERN LANDMASS OF THE TOLO CHANNEL TO THE UNUSUAL LACUSTRINE SEDIMENTS OF PALAEOGENE AGE FOUND ON PING CHAU.

BOTH AREAS HAVE BEEN DESIGNATED SITES OF SPECIAL INTEREST, LARGELY FOR THEIR GEOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE.
