HK SPENDS MORE ON NEW ROADS
THE GOVERNMENT ON AVERAGE SPENT $3,200 MILLION A YEAR BETWEEN 1988 AND 1990 ON NEW ROADS IN HONG KONG,.COMPARED WITH $800 MILLION IN SINGAPORE.
THIS WAS STATED BY THE SECRETARY FOR TRANSPORT, MR MICHAEL LEUNG, IN A WRITTEN REPLY TO A QUESTION BY THE HON PETER WONG HONG- YUEN, IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
IN THE THREE-YEAR PERIOD FROM 1989 ΤΟ 1991, GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE WAS AS FOLLOWS:

MR LEUNG POINTED OUT THAT THE HIGHER EXPENDITURE ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN 1989 AND 1990 WAS DUE TO WORK ON SEVERAL MAJOR PROJECTS, INCLUDING THE KWUN TONG BYPASS, SHING MUN TUNNELS AND TSEUNG KWAN O TUNNEL.

THE ADMINISTRATION IS EXAMINING WHETHER THE CONVENTION ON ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN (CEDAW) SHOULD BE APPLIED TO HONG KONG, THE ACTING SECRETARY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS, MR PETER LAI, SAID TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
REPLYING ΤΟ A QUESTION BY THE HON ANDREW WONG IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, MR LAI SAID CEDAW WENT FURTHER IN OUTLAWING DISCRIMINATION IN THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTORS.
"IT IS BECAUSE THE CONVENTION, IF IMPLEMENTED, WOULD HAVE SUCH DIRECT AND POSSIBLY SERIOUS IMPACT ON THE PUBLIC THAT A DETAILED STUDY OF THE ISSUES INVOLVED IS REQUIRED, HE SAID.

THE SECRETARY ADDED:
"WE HAVE ΤΟ MAKE SURE THAT HONG KONG CAN COMPLY WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE CONVENTION BEFORE WE ARE IN A POSITION TO ASK THE UNITED KINGDOM GOVERNMENT TO EXTEND THE CONVENTION TO HONG KONG.
