RESULTS OF 1990 SURVEY OF BUILDING, CONSTRUCTION
AND REAL ESTATE SECTORS

THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT RELEASED TODAY THE RESULTS OF THE 1990 SURVEY OF BUILDING, CONSTRUCTION AND REAL ESTATE SECTORS WHICH WAS CONDUCTED FROM APRIL LAST YEAR TO EARLY THIS YEAR.
THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT 13,500 CONSTRUCTION HAD OPERATED IN 1990.
ESTABLISHMENTS
THE GROSS VALUE OF CONSTRUCTION WORK PERFORMED BY THESE ESTABLISHMENTS DURING 1990 AMOUNTED TO $99.8 BILLION, REPRESENTING AN INCREASE OF 16% OVER 1989.
ALL VALUE FIGURES ARE EXPRESSED IN CURRENT PRICE TERMS. THE PERCENTAGE CHANGES DERIVED FROM THESE FIGURES HAVE NOT BEEN ADJUSTED FOR PRICE INCREASES. CAUTION SHOULD THEREFORE BE TAKEN IN INTERPRETING THE SURVEY RESULTS.
FROM THE 1990 ROUND OF THE SURVEY, THE HONG KONG STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION (HSIC) WAS ADOPTED FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES COVERED BY THE SURVEY.
BEFORE THE 1990 SURVEY, THE INTERNATIONAL STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION (ISIC) WAS USED.

THE HSIC IS A NEW STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION WHICH WILL USED IN
ALL ECONOMIC SURVEYS CONDUCTED BY THE DEPARTMENT.
IT ENHANCES THE COMPARABILITY OF STATISTICS PRODUCED FROM THE ECONOMIC SURVEYS. TO FACILITATE COMPARISON, RESULTS OF THE 1989 SURVEY HAVE BEEN REVISED BASED ON THIS NEW CLASSIFICATION.
IN 1990,
THE TOTAL EXPENDITURE INCURRED BY THE CONSTRUCTION ESTABLISHMENTS WAS $96.6 BILLION.
THIS INCLUDED $24.5 BILLION ON COMPENSATION OF EMPLOYEES AND PAYMENTS TO LABOUR-ONLY SUB-CONTRACTORS; $25 BILLION ON CONSUMPTION OF MATERIALS, SUPPLIES, AND MAINTENANCE SERVICES; $40.8 BILLION ON PAYMENTS FOR SUB-CONTRACT WORK RENDERED BY FEE SUB-CONTRACTORS; AND 36.4 BILLION ON MISCELLANEOUS OPERATING EXPENSES.
THE TOTAL VALUE ADDED OF THESE ESTABLISHMENTS, MEASURE OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY'S CONTRIBUTION TO GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT, AMOUNTED TO $29.8 BILLION IN REPRESENTED AN INCREASE OF 20% OVER 1989.
