RETAIL SALES OF FUELS ROSE BY 11 PER CENT IN VALUE BUT REMAINED ALMOST UNCHANGED IN VOLUME, WHILE THAT OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO WENT UP BY SIX PER CENT IN VALUE AND FOUR PER CENT IN VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, BOTH "CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR ALLIED PRODUCTS" AND CONSUMER DURABLES DECREASED BY FIVE PER CENT AND EIGHT PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VALUE AND SALES VOLUME.

RETAIL SALES OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS WENT DOWN BY FOUR PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, SUPERMARKETS INCREASED BY SIX PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND FIVE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS, RETAIL SALES OF "CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS" AND "MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS" DECREASED BY 6 PER CENT AND 11 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY. DEPARTMENT STORES DROPPED PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 14 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.
