PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF RETAIL SALES SURVEY FOR APRIL

THE VALUE OF TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN APRIL 1989, ESTIMATED $8,486 MILLION, INCREASED BY 10 PER CENT WHEN COMPARED WITH APRIL 1988 WHILST THEIR VOLUME INCREASED BY 2 PER CENT, ACCORDING ΤΟ THE PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF A SURVEY RELEASED TODAY (SATURDAY)

THIS SUGGESTS THAT LOCAL CONSUMER SPENDING HAS BEEN MODERATING.

ANALYSED BY MAJOR TRADE GROUPS, RETAIL SALES OF FUELS INCREASED BY 17 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 12 PER CENT IN VOLUME. FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO ROSE BY 17 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 7 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS WENT UP BY 33 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 20 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

HOWEVER, RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES INCREASED BY ONLY 1 PER CENT IN VALUE AND DROPPED BY 7 PER CENT IN VOLUME. SALES OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS ROSE BY 5 PER CENT IN VALUE BUT DROPPED BY 2 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, RETAIL SALES OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED BY 37 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 28 PER CENT IN SUPERMARKETS AND DEPARTMENT STORES WENT UP BY 18 PER CENT AND 15 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VALUE, AND 6 PER CENT AND 4 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VOLUME.

HOWEVER, RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS DROPPED BY 18 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 22 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

COMPARING THE PERIOD JANUARY TO APRIL OF 1989 WITH THE SAME PERIOD IN 1988, TOTAL RETAIL SALES INCREASED BY 14 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 6 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY MAJOR TRADE GROUPS. SALES OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO ROSE BY 12 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 1 PER CENT IN VOLUME. FUELS WENT UP BY 2 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND REMAINED ALMOST UNCHANGED IN SALES VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS WENT UP BY 24 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 12 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES INCREASED BY 16 PER CENT IN VALIE AND 7 PER CENT IN VOLUME. SALES OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS ROSE PER CENT IN VALUE AND 6 PER CENT IN VOLUME.
