UP TO NOW, FOUR BLOOD DONOR UNITS WERE FOUND TO BE INFECTED BY THE VIRUS.

SINCE THE GOVERNMENT HAS INTENSIFIED ITS EDUCATION AND PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN ON AIDS ON APRIL 21, THE AIDS COUNSELLING SERVICE HAD RECEIVED 2 411 CALLS.

THE AIDS COUNSELLING SERVICE WAS FIRST SET UP IN NOVEMBER 1985, AND UP TO NOW, OVER 7 770 CALLS WERE RECEIVED.

MEANWHILE, THE MEDICAL AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT ALSO ANNOUNCED THE PRELIMINARY FINDINGS OF A PRE-CAMPAIGN SURVEY CONDUCTED TO FIND OUT PEOPLE'S AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE OF AIDS.

ACCORDING TO THE FINDINGS, VIRTUALLY ALL ADULTS WERE AWARE OF AIDS, WITH TELEVISION AND NEWSPAPER BEING THE PRIMARY SOURCES OF AWARENESS.

THE SURVEY RESULT SHOWED THAT THERE WAS OVERWHELMING CONSENSUS THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD LAUNCH MORE INTENSIVE PUBLICITY REGARDING AIDS SO THAT MORE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE DISEASE AND HOW TO PREVENT AND AVOID IT.

THE PRE-CAMPAIGN SURVEY, COMMISSIONED BY THE CITY AND NEW TERRITORIES ADMINISTRATION, WAS CARRIED OUT BETWEEN APRIL 2 AND 10 JUST BEFORE THE LAUNCH OF THE EDUCATION AND PUBLICITY PROGRAMME,

THE AIM OF THE SURVEY WAS TO SERVE AS A BENCHMARK STUDY ON PEOPLE'S KNOWLEDGE OF AIDS PRIOR TO THE PUBLICITY ACTIVITIES.

IT ALSO SHOWED THAT SLIGHTLY MORE THAN HALF THE PEOPLE INTERVIEWED WERE CONSCIOUS OF PUBLICITY ON AIDS IN TELEVISION, PARTICULARLY THE TELEPHONE ENQUIRY SERVICE.

A SECOND SURVEY WILL BE CONDUCTED AT A LATER STAGE TO FIND OUT THE CHANGE IN PEOPLE'S ATTITUDES TOWARDS AIDS AFTER THE LAUNCHING OF THE EDUCATION AND PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN ON THE DISEASE.
