TO COPE WITH ANTICIPATED PASSENGER DEMAND FOLLOWING THE CANCELLATION OF THE 'FERRY SERVICE, EXTRA CROSS-HARBOUR BUSES WILL BE PUT INTO SERVICE, AND MTR FREQUENCIES BETWEEN THE TWO POINTS WILL BE INCREASED FROM THE SAME DAY.

KMB AND CMB HAVE BEEN REQUESTED TO CLOSELY MONITOR PASSENGER DEMAND IN KWUN TONG AND CENTRAL AND TO DEPLOY ADDITIONAL BUSES ON THE EXISTING CROSS-HARBOUR BUS ROUTE 101 FROM KWUN TONG TO KENNEDY TOWN IF NECESSARY.

FROM THE SAME DAY, MTR SERVICES WILL OPERATE AT A TWO-MINUTE FREQUENCY, STARTING HALF-AN-HOUR EARLY FROM 8 AM TO COPE WITH PASSENGER DEMAND.

THE IMPROVEMENT TO MTR SERVICES AND THE DEPLOYMENT OF ADDITIONAL BUS SERVICES WILL MEET THE DEMAND OF ABOUT 600 PASSENGERS AFFECTED BY THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE FERRY SERVICE.

MEANWHILE, NEGOTIATION WITH THE TWO BUS COMPANIES FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW CROSS-HARBOUR BUS SERVICE BETWEEN KWUN TONG AND CENTRAL VIA THE AIRPORT TUNNEL IS PROGRESSING.

HONG KONG IS PREPARED TO ADOPT A NEW COMMODITY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM BASED ON THE INTERNATIONAL +HARMONISED COMMODITY DESCRIPTION AND CODING SYSTEM+ OR +HARMONISED SYSTEM+ (HS) FOR SHORT.

WHEN THE NEW SYSTEM IS IMPLEMENTED, IMPORTERS AND EXPORTERS WILL BE LEGALLY REQUIRED TO USE IT IN MAKING IMPORT AND EXPORT DECLARATIONS, IN PLACE OF THE STANDARD INTERNATIONAL TRADE CLASSIFICATION (SITC) REVISION 2 BASED SYSTEM CURRENTLY IN USE.

THE NEW IMPORT AND EXPORT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM OR THE HONG KONG HARMONISED COMMODITY DESCRIPTION AND CODING SYSTEM (HK HS), WILL COMPRISE SOME 5 500 EIGHT-DIGIT CODES.

THE HS IS DESIGNED BY THE CUSTOMS CO-OPERATION COUNCIL TO SERVE AS A MULTI-PURPOSE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM SUITABLE FOR USE BY CUSTOMS AND STATISTICAL AUTHORITIES, TRADERS, CARRIERS AND OTHERS CONCERNED WITH INTERNATIONAL TRADE.

BY HARMONISING THE MAJOR NOMENCLATURES CURRENTLY IN USE IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES FOR CUSTOMS AND STATISTICAL PURPOSES, THE HB WILL FACILITATE THE COMPARISON OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE STATISTICS AND TRADE NEGOTIATIONS AMONG COUNTRIES USING THE SYSTEM AND WILL REDUCE THE COST INVOLVED IN RE-CLASSIFYING AND RE-DESCRIBING GOODS UNDER VARIOUS CLASSIFICATIONS WHEN THEY ARE TRANSPORTED FROM ONE COUNTRY TO ANOTHER.
