SEPTEMBER RETAIL SALES SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED

THE VALUE OF RETAIL SALES IN SEPTEMBER 1985, ESTIMATED AT 35 562 MILLION, WAS ONE PER CENT HIGHER THAN IN SEPTEMBER 1984, WHILE THEIR VOLUME WAS ONE PER CENT LOWER, ACCORDING TO THE PROVISIONAL SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED TODAY BY THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.

RETAIL SALES FELL BY ONE PER CENT IN VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN VOLUME IN THE THIRD QUARTER OF 1985 WHEN COMPARED WITH THE SAME QUARTER IN 1984.

COMPARED WITH AUGUST 1985, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON IS AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, RETAIL SALES FOR SEPTEMBER 1985 INCREASED BY THREE PER CENT IN VALUE AND ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME.

WHEN COMPARED WITH SEPTEMBER 1984, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY FIVE PER CENT IN VALUE BUT DECREASED BY FOUR PER CENT IN VOLUME. FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO RECORDED INCREASES OF FOUR PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND THREE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES ROSE BY THREE PER CENT IN VALUE AND ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME. FUELS SHOWED AN INCREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT NO CHANGE IN SALES VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ FELL BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND THREE PER CENT IN VOLUME.

COMPARING THE THIRD QUARTER OF 1985 WITH THE SAME QUARTER IN 1984, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS SHOWED AN INCREASE OF SEVEN PER CENT IN VALUE BUT A DECREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME, FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO ROSE BY TWO PER CENT AND FUELS BY ONE PER CENT IN BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES SHOWED NO CHANGE IN VALUE BUT A DECREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME, WHILE +OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ DROPPED BY SIX PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.

WHEN COMPARED WITH AUGUST 1985, RETAIL SALES OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO RECORDED INCREASES OF SEVEN PER CENT IN VALUE AND FOUR PER CENT IN VOLUME. CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY SIX PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND THREE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME WHILE +OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ ROSE BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME. ON THE OTHER HAND, RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES DECREASED BY ONE PER CENT IN VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN VOLUME, WHILE FUELS SHOWED A DECREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME.
