THE OVERALL MEDIAN MONTHLY INCOME FROM MAIN EMPLOYMENT WAS $1 516, AS COMPARED WITH $738 IN 1976. DISCOUNTING THE INCREASE IN CONSUMER PRICES BETWEEN 1976 AND 1981, REAL EARNINGS HAVE INCREASED AT SEVEN PER CENT PER ANNUM. THE REAL INCREASE IN MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME OVER THE 5-YEAR PERIOD WAS ALSO SEVEN PER CENT PER ANNUM.
THERE WAS A STEADY DECREASE IN THE AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD SIZE DURING THE 10-YEAR PERIOD, FROM 4.5 PERSONS IN 1971 TO 4.2 IN 1976 AND TO 3.9 IN 1981.

SIMPLE NUCLEAR FAMILIES A COUPLE WITH OR WITHOUT UNMARRIED CHILDREN OR A SINGLE PARENT WITH UNMARRIED CHILDREN - WERE MOST COMMON, COMPRISING 54 PER CENT OF ALL HOUSEHOLDS.
VERTICALLY EXTENDED NUCLEAR FAMILJES NUCLEAR FAMILIES LIVING WITH A SINGLE PARENT OF ONE OF THE SPOUSES OR A MARRIED CHILD HAVE BECOME MORE POPULAR SINCE 1976. ITS PROPORTION INCREASED FROM LESS THAN A TENTH TO ABOUT A SEVENTH DURING THIS PERIOD.
A GREATER PROPORTION OF THE POPULATION (39 PER CENT) WERE IN PUBLIC AND AIDED HOUSING IN 1981 THAN IN 1971 (38 PER CENT) THE INCREASE, HOWEVER, WAS LESS SIGNIFICANT THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN WITHOUT THE EFFECT OF RECENT IMMIGRANTS.
THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE PROPORTION OF HOUSEHOLDS OWNING THE IR OWN ACCOMMODATION (FROM 18 PER CENT TO 28 PER CENT). THE PROPORTION OF SUB-TENANTS DECREASED FROM 20 PER CENT TO 12 PER CENT.
AT THE SAME TIME, THERE WERE LESS HOUSEHOLDS SHARING ACCOMMODATION WITH OTHERS. IN PRIVATE HOUSING, THE AVERAGE DEGREE OF SHARING WAS 1.35 HOUSEHOLDS PER LIVING QUARTER IN 1981, AS COMPARED WITH 1.56 IN 1971.
MEDIAN RENT PER MONTH IN PUBLIC HOUSING WAS $151 IN FEBRUARY 1981, WHICH COMPARES WITH $442 FOR PRIVATE HOUSING. THE MAJORITY OF HOUSEHOLDS PAYING LOWER RENT THAN THIS AMOUNT IN PRIVATE HOUSING WERE SHARING ACCOMMODATION WITH OTHERS.
A SERIES OF CENSUS REPORTS CONTAINING DETAILED INFORMATION ON THE POPULATION WILL BE PUBLISHED. THESE WILL INCLUDE, IN PARTICULAR, THE BASIC TABLES, THE GRAPHIC GUIDE AND THE MAIN REPORT,
