X-ray Surveys.

Two X-ray surveys have been carried out in the past 2 years, Surveys are done on 35 millimetre film and all radiological abnormalities are investigated by the Government Tuberculosis Service.

The first survey was carried out at Stanley Prison which waLS over-crowded, The prisoners, all males, were examined and all infectious cases of pulmonary tuberculosis isolated.

It was intended to deal similarly with all subsequent prisoners before admission but this proved impracticable.

The results of the survey were as follows :-

Number of inmates X-rayed

Number re-X-rayed (Large film)

Number of active cases

Percentage suffering from active tuberculosis

Long Term

1054

Short Term

1407

The results tend to show that despite the over-orowded condition there is little danger to health from tuberculosis - in fact rather the reverse,

The second survey was carried out in 1949 - 1950 and included all individuals employed in the Government Service, The results were as follows :

Total muber I-rayed

This survey included males and females between the ages of 16 and 60 years.
