At the beginning of the week, at the Governor of Hong Kong's suggestion, we held a meeting at which Sir Arthur Morse, Mr. Chau, and Sir Man Kam Lo, and Colonel Ride were present to consider what could be done to establish an Endowment Fund for the Hong Kong University. the Hong Kong representatives were that unless H.M.G. is able to assist financially there would be little chance of raising sufficient money in Hong Kong for this purpose. It was thought that at least £500,000 would be required and the Governor's suggestion was that half of this should come from H.M.G. and half from the Colony. The meeting ended with the suggestion that a further meeting should be arranged with the Secretary of State and it is now proposed that this should be held at 10 a.m. on Friday 27th July in the Secretary of State's room here. Colonel Ride has returned to Hong Kong and at the previous meeting he had suggested that you might be willing to represent the University at the meeting with the Secretary of State.
Sir Arthur Morse and Sir Man Kam Lo are being asked whether the time and the date is convenient for them and the proposal is that Sir Christopher Cox and Mr. Walter Adams should also attend. I hope that you will be able to attend and I would be grateful if you could let me have a reply as soon as possible. I assume that you have already been told that a meeting with the Secretary of State was under considera- tion?
