BUILDINGS AND EQUIPMENT
Investigation of a statement that, in general terms, more space would be required if present courses in first year were to be divided into Botany and Zoology as separate subjects was deferred pending an appointment to the newly-created Chair of Zoology.
No recommendation in respect of this Department can be made at this stage.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Storage space is inadequate. There is now only one small service store for chemicals; the Combustion Room, the Dark Room and the only Lecturer's Room have been converted temporarily for storage. Some solvents, for lack of a suitable solvent store, are temporarily housed in the Department of Pathology.
Laboratory space is insufficient by far for present needs. The Advanced Laboratory, which is constructed to accommodate 16, has this session accommodated 19, but in September 1950 cannot accommodate the 30 estimated. For the proposed classes from September 1950 in Organic Chemistry to second year medical students there will be no suitable accommodation. There is no provision for a physical chemistry research laboratory, and no space for private laboratories for the increased staff recommended in paragraph 53 below. Research work has been begun on certain Asiatic plant products, and a small additional laboratory will be needed for large-scale operations in this connection.

A glass-working room for the glass-blower is essential; now works in a corner of the elementary laboratory, and requires a store for 1⁄2 ton of glass. Space is also required for shelving for Chemistry journals to be withdrawn from the Main Library. A small room is required for a Chemistry Muscum.
It is recommended that provision be made for the following: Unpacking and heavy chemical store (minimum 1600 sq. ft) Solvent store (1000 cu. ft. of 50°F air-cooled space)
