'Dear Gent:
This letter is my auswer to go! Lettera or 27th December 1944 (55215) and of 30th May, 1945 (12955/F/44). I ma at last able to give you such views as I have been able to form on the future of Hongkong University.
Although I have not so far visited Hongkong I have had the advantage, during my time in China, of useful discussions with Professor Gordon King and Col. (Professor) Lindsay Ride. My first Chinese colleague hero, Jr. Huang Yoing-Toung, now at Oxford, was able to tell me something of the University from the students' point of view. I cnclose a copy of a memorandu
ritten by Prof. King (and onbodying also the views of Prof. Rado) which was sent to you some time ago.

I have also before me a number of documents which you werc eo kind as to send me, and a copy of the 1939 keport of the Camlitee on the Development of Hongkong University.
First of all, I should like to say that I cntirely arree with the view expresend 1: Ch. I of the Report that the University has a vocation to train students from all over China, representing thereby a University of British type and tradition. The American influence is of courcu ulgespread in Chtuese oducation, and whiz : 3 am an admirer of tha,many good points of the American University grsten, I corsider that the Drilish tradition hes also many good peinis, to which the Chinese are by no moans bliad,
I feel sure, from the experience I have had working with the Chinese Ministry of Education in Chungking, especially an it is now under M, Chu Chia-Tua and Or, dan ha
that the Chiusse welcome thie principls.
I quite realise that the acceptance of the All-China" Function of Kong Kong University Anvolves a decision on major policy, in which the Foreign Office will be ritally concerned. I am convinced that the aider, rather than the Barrower, prosvau. 18 the right one, (e. the Gordon King amorandu Bootdona 3(a) and (b)).
