With regard to Hong Kong University, it is most kind of
you to evince such a keen interest in its fate. If only a majority
of Hong Kong's business men had your vision and breadth of outlook,
there need be no fears for its future. Of course the background to
all our schemes and hopes and doubts is the attitude of the Home
Government, and down to date no policy has been declared regarding
the Colony as a whole, or any of its institutions or functions in
particular. D.J. Sloss, C.B.E., our late Vice-Chancellor, though
his present status is undefined, is understood to be doing what he
can to arouse the interest of the Colonial Office, thus far
without tangible results. He has collected some kind of Committee,
