There is an old Chinese saying: "Tragedy Makes a Nation Great" China has had eight years of tragedy a tragedy that has engulfed many of your own lives. Now that those bitter years are over, it is for you to prove that the saying is correct. It is up to you to make China great great both materially and spiritually.
I am sure, nothing you could do would be more in keeping with the wishes of our honoured guest, Admiral Sir Cecil Harcourt, than that.

EXTRACT FROM THE "REPLY BY ADMIRAL HARCOURT"
Speaking to the students of Hong Kong University, he endorsed the remarks made by Mr. R.A. Hall; and mentioned that the question of the future of the University had been foremost in the thoughts of the Generalissimo when
Sir Cecil saw him in Chungking some time ago. The building of the University is but a shell, but it is hoped that some simple classes may be recommenced in October of this year, but more advanced work and research work will have to be deferred until apparatus and equipment can be furnished, which it is impossible to do before early next year.
