APPENDIX VI.
MAGNETIC RANGE, STONECUTTER'S ISLAND, HONG KONG.
Shortly after my arrival at SHUM SHUI PO Camp, I was warned by Mr. C.J. MANNING, Superintending Electrical Engineer, Hong Kong Navȧl Dockyard, also a prisoner at the camp, to give no information if questioned by the Japanese about the Stonecutter's Magnetic Range which, so Manning told me, had not been destroyed and had been apparently captured intact..
This warning was given in view of the fact that.
from December 1940 to July 1941, I had been working in Manning's Department in connection with Degaussing in general and with the building and operation of this Magnetic Range in particular.
I was not approached by the Japanese.
I gather that some Japanese electrical officer had questioned Manning about the unit of magnetic field. Such an elementary question, while indicating that the Japanese may have guessed the purpose of the Range, would show that the interrogating officer was not too conversant with the principles involved.
