I left Kweiyang on 2nd May by truck and reached Kweilin on 5th May. Here I found 32 students, two University lecturers in Engineering and the University accountant (Mr. M.K. Cheng) - a total of 35 people.

On 9th May I left Kweilin and proceeded to Kukong where I stayed from 11th to 30th May. Here I interviewed 69 people belonging to the University or Nursing School, including 3 pharmacists. Whilst in Kukong I visited the National Sun Yat Sen University in Pingshek and also the newly acquired premises of Lingnan University and had very satisfactory interviews with the Dean and the President respectively.

On my return journey to Chungking I found further groups of students at each place of stay and was able to give them some assistance in the transport problem at Chin Cheng Chiang and at Kweiyang. The question of leaving a representative at each of the main places en route 1.e. Kukong, Iveilin, Liuchow and Kweiyang also required some consideration, so that students escaping at later dates could secure necessary informa- tion and assistance. At Kukong Mr. A.H. Bentley, who was already working with Col. Ride (now with Mr. Sedgwick) and who was a part-time lecturer in Pharmacy at the University, seemed the obvious person. Mr. Bentley's services would be available until about mid-August, when he has been invited to join the staff of the National School of Pharmacy in Chungking. By this time, however, the exodus of students should have almost ceased. In Kweilin Mr. M.K. Cheng, former University accountant, was taken on to the staff of Mr. Sedgwick with the understanding that he should be free to pay special attention to the needs of students, most of whom are personally known to him. In Liuchow a medical graduate of the Univer- sity Dr. 0.C. Lin, who is at present on the staff of the Provincial Kospital, promised to make contact with students passing through that town from Kwangchowwan and to refer them for assistance either to Kweilin or to Kweiyang. In Kweiyang I had great help from Mr. R.E. Lawry, a member of the Friends Ambulance Unit, who had already assisted many of our students to obtain free transport. Mr. Lawry is willing to maintain this work and to take charge of any funds we may send him both for the assistance of students passing through and for the purpose of making regular allowances to students in Hsiang Ya Medical College and Great Chins University. It would be difficult to think of a more satisfactory arrangement.

The following figures express in concise form the work which has Pon outlined above:~
