CHAIRMAN

The Rt. Hon Lord Lloyd of Dolobran G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., D.S.O.

Dear Mr. Gent,

SECRETARY-GENERAL

A. J. S. White, O.B.E.

31st January, 1941.

Thank you for your letter of the 28th January, Reference 53611/3/41.

I note that you will now telegraph to Hongkong to say that the proposed scheme of

scholarships has the approval of the British Council. I am so glad that the University is in contact with the Sino-British Cultural Association in this matter, as I found Mr. Han Li Wu one of the most effective Chinese that I ever met.

I notice that the expression of "Council" in the last sentence of the Acting-Governor's telegram refers to the Council of Hongkong. You probably know that we have a Committee for dealing with foreign students in this country who are at Universities under our scheme of bursaries and scholarships, and I am sure that the officer in charge of this work would be glad to be of any assistance to the two Chinese brought over by the Rhodes Trustees if this were in any way either desirable or possible.

Yours sincerely,

E. Gent, Esq. COLONIAL OFFICE.
