A. Educational relations between inule and china 1.

The primary object of my visit to China was to explore practical methods by which educational relations between unina and Incis could be strengthened with special reference to the possibility of arranging exchanges of teachere and studenta between indian and Chinese educational institutions and of finding ways of helping China in regard to the temporary difficulties with which her educational system 18 laced at the moment.

2.

The Chinese rightly attach reut importance to maintaining educational activities during war time and to developing the national reserves of brain power, particularly in view of the contribution which thece will be required to make towards the vast scheme of re-construction which it is proposed to put in hand as soon as peace comes. Universit, teloners and students are not merely exempted from military service but are actively encouraged to stick to their deule rather than to join the army. Une can have nothing but admiration for the determination with which universities and schoola nave been carried on in spite of enforced evacuation and constant bombing and of the many hardships caused by the recent xxxxXxEXLINK abnormal increase in the cost of living and the general difficulties in the way of obtaining supplies from abroud. At the beje time the adverse effect of these factors on the chance of maintaining educational standards for an indefinite period cannot be ignored and is indeed fully realised by the chinese themselves. This is why they are gravely concerned at their present intellectual isolation and would particularly appreciate a concerted and sustained effort on on our part to break it down.

o far as cultural relations between India and China are concerned the main lines of approach would appear to be as follo#8: -
