Chinese agricul- ture highly developed and specialised as it is in relation to flat areas is curiously ignorant in regard to the cultivation of hillside lands and erosion production seems to be as much foreign to the Chinese cultivator as it is to many other races. rather a curious state of affairs consid ring the age old traditions of high farming caracteristic of the Chinese. One thing, ho ver, is certain and that is once the Chinese cultivator can be induced to see that the new methods proposed for utilising these lands are really sound and reliable he will not be slow to follow them up. On this account Mr Flippances' investigations and work are deserving of every encourage-

ment.
