the 26th June and for your prompt
assistance in the matter of Hong Kong.
I am very ready to accept the suggestion
that Major-General Norton should be sent
as Govern
ael (emporarily

of Hong Kong,
and, following the recognised procedure in regard to Colonial governorships, I
have written to the Prime Minister
asking for his concurrence. I understand

that the Military Secretary will arranging for an urgent telegram to be sent to
India, asking that Norton should be
released for this purpose, and as soon as
I hear that he can be released and that
the Prime Minister agrees, I will have
the necessary submission made to the
Palace with a Dormant Commission for the
King's approval. On receipt of the
King's approval,, I will telegraph to the
Smith
Office administering the government of
Hong Kong
