Two of these were for the production of com-
plete airframes to the designs of two of the professional firms,
and six for the manufacture of components of a professionally
designed aero-engine. This scheme was subsequently greatly
developed. The shadow factories came into production with re-
markable rapidity, and the output of machines is now on an enormous
scale.
Twenty years ago Great Britain had the most powerful air-
force in the world. In keeping with the country's policy of dis-
armament in the interests of peace, this powerful striking force
was reduced to negligible proportions. Now Great Britain, having
decided to re-assert herself as a great Power, is rapidly building
a new air-force commensurate with her position and her needs.
