Duties of office and qualifications required for their performance.

As istant Superintendent of the Hong Kong Prison, Stanley. Should have served in one of H.K.'s Reg- ular Forces or received a Univer- sity education. It is not essential that he should have served in the Home or Colonial Prisons Services. He can be trained satisfactorily here. is the right type of man rather than his knowledge of Prison Ad- ministration which is important.

To be able to converse in Urdu would be an advantage.

£500 - £820 (£500 for the first two years and then by annual increments of 1 of £70, 4 of £25, 1 of £90, and 2 of £30.) plus a non-pension- able residential allowance payable only while in Colony at the follow- ing rate:

Salaries are converted for payment in local currency at a rate fixed from time to time by Government. They are at present paid at the rate of 1/3 $1 so long as the Treasury rate of the dollar based on the average monthly rate of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank remains at or below that rate. A deduction of 4% from salary is made as contribution to the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Scheme.

If Government quarters are pro- vided the officer will be charged 12% of his basic salary for un- furnished or 13% for furnished quarters. If the officer resides in Government quarters attached to the Prisons these rates will be reduced to 6% and 7% respectively.

First Class Passage will be pro- vided in accordance with Colonial Regulation No. 81.
