I have the honour to refer to paragraph 2 of

2/53625735 your despatch No. 280 of 25th July, 1935, regarding the

appointment of Mr. E.P.H. Lang as Registrar of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong and to inform you that Mr. Lang is due to retire on pension on 21st April, 1940, when he will attain the age of sixty years. Mr. Làng may accordingly be expected to proceed on leave prior to retirement to- wards the end of the present year and it is now necessary to consider the question of his successor.

2. For promotion to the vacancy I have to recommend Mr. L.R. Andrewes, an officer on the time scale of the Legal Service, who at present performs the duties of the post of Official Receiver in Bank- ruptcy and Registrar of Trade Marks and Patents (vide correspondence ending with Mr. Ormsby-Gore's despatch confidential (3) of 17th June, 1937). Mr. Andrewes has previously acted with success in the post of Registrar and is well recommended by the Judges and the Attorney-General for substantive appointment to this post.
