of Lung Wah Hropitals.

At (12) on the 1938 file the Governor

sought approval for an extra grant of $150,000 towards

the Tung Wah Hospital to enable them to make up their

deficit on the workings of 1937. In the same despatch

the Governor informed us that the Government's aim was

to secure control over the administration of the

hospital commensurate with the assistance from

Government they would clearly require in future, and

stated the proposals which had been put forward with

this aim in view (para. 9 of 12 on 53556/38). In

our reply at (14) on that file we expressed the hope

that these proposals would be accepted by the Annual

Committee and the Permanent Board of Advisers.

proposals have now been accepted with two slight

modifications:-

(1) The constitution of the Medical Committee which

is to control the medical administration of the

hospitals is somewhat different from the original

suggestion.

(2) The original proposal suggested that Chinese

medicine should be restricted to two of the hospitals;

it has now been agreed to administer it in certain

wards only of all three hospitals, but only to those

who spontaneously ask for it.

It is very satisfactory that these proposals

should have been accepted with such slight

modifications, as they are fairly drastic in nature
