sir,
CHINA SECTION.
I write with further reference to my letter of
2nd December on the subject of delays in the mail service
with Canton in consequence of the Japanese control of the
Pearl River.
A report from the British United Press was
published in the newspapers of Saturday to the effect that
Japan intended in future to send all overseas mail from
Canton via Formosa, instead of via Hong Kong, and that they
had rejected a British official objection to this course.
I should much appreciate it if you would let me
know whether this report is correct and if so what further
steps will be taken by His Majesty's Government to ensure
the speedy transit of mails from Canton.
Yours faithfully,
(Signed)
The Under-Secretary of State.
Foreign Office,
8.2.1.
A. de V. Leigh
Secretary.
