tenth wife of the new owner and of course all the

concubines and relations that go with her. I have

appealed to his solicitors and have received an order

insisting on my getting out.

An official of the Supreme Court tells me that

he has scores of eviction cases for consideration and

that the law as it stands can do nothing. A Rents

Commission has recently been formed and is now placing

its finding before the Governor but the results at the

time are not known and may or may not save English homes

in a British Colony from the clutches of these interlopers,

tho' I could use a much stronger term. We, and I speak on

behalf of the British community here, think it a disgrace-

ful and unheard of state of affairs we are all sworn to

take up arms in defence of Hong Kong should invasion

threaten, and hope that something on the lines of the Rent

Restrictions Act at Home will be enforced. If these

Generals, business men etc. are made to find us suitable

alternative accommodation at reasonable rents (an

impossibility we know) then the situation will be made

much easier. I could go much further into this matter,

but space and time do not permit. However you may take

it from me sir that the situation is desperate and that

English people in all walks of life are threatened with

this
