As a result of a petition (enclosure 1)
received from the Matrons and European sisters in the
service of the Hong Kong Government, the Governor
devised a revision in the number of posts in the

for this revised scheme, details of which are given
in paragraph 3 of the despatch.
The new scheme compares with the present

The Governor states that the most important
benefit secured by Nursing sisters from these changes
will be the prospect which every efficient sister will
have of preceding to a salary of at least £420 per
annum, with the further prospect of a pension of just
over £3 per week upon retirement after 16 years'
service.
The proposed new scheme differs very slightly
from the revised scheme proposed in paragraph 5 of the
petition. Although the scale for Nursing Sisters is
£220-15-295 instead of £220-15-355, this is to a
certain extent compensated by the fact that under the
scheme Nursing Sisters will upon recommendation, be
