Copy No.119.
Mr.Eden to Sir E.Phipps (Paris).
Foreign Office, October 8, 1937.
Sir,
THE French Ambassador spoke to me today about
the policy of His Majesty's Government in respect of the
supply of arms to the Far East. Were we still allowing
arms to proceed to China? He had heard, for instance, that
we had sold some aeroplanes to the Chinese Government.

I replied that this was so, but that I understood
that the contract was in fact an old one, made before
the present hostilities broke out. We were, as a matter
of principle, at present allowing the export of arms to
China, and had not refused to grant any licences to that
country.
I am, etc.,
ANTHONY EDEN.
