My telegram No.26 Question suggested in my
sixth paragraph has received an unexpectedly prompt reply.
2. Hitherto bombing attacks have been on track
only but today 21st October at 12.12 hours a slow train
proceeding not towards Canton but towards Kowloon was
attacked by machine gun fire from Japanese aeroplane
at Chashan four miles south of Sheklung. The train
had four British section waggons but these were not
damaged. Three machine gun bullets pierced the tender
of the engine and four more pierced a waggon in both
cases property of Chinese section. No casualties.

This was immediately followed by eleven bombs
on the track but not contiguous to train.
