10. LIFE-JACKETS:-One approved life-jacket shall be carried for each person on board.
GROUP I. CLASS 4.
11. The requirements as to life saving appliances specified under the heading Group I. Class 4" shall be
complied with by—
(a) Ships engaged in the occasional carriage of unberth- ed passengers between Hong Kong and the Caroline Islands, Ladrone or Mariana Islands, Ellice Islands, Gilbert Islands, Guam, Marshall Islands and Pelew Islands, and
(b) Ships engaged in the carriage of unberthed passen- gers on international voyages in the areas of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea to the northward of a line drawn from Point Calimere (India) to Achin Head (Sumatra) and thence to Penang.
12. DAVITS :—A ship of this class shall be provided with sets of davits in accordance with its length as specified in Column (A) of Table No. 3.
When, in the opinion of the Government Marine Sur- veyor, it is neither practicable nor reasonable to place on a ship the number of sets of davits required by Column (A) of Table No. 3, the Government Marine Surveyor may authorise under exceptional conditions, a smaller number of sets of davits, provided always that this number shall never

be less than the minimum number fixed by Column (B) of the Table, and that the total capacity of the boats on the ship shall be at least up to the minimum capacity required by Column (F).

13. LIFEBOATS, LIFE RAFTS AND BUOYANT AP- PARATUS:-Each set of davits shall have a boat of Class 1 attached to it.
In the case of ships of Group I. Class 4 engaged on voyages referred to in sub-paragraph (a) of regulation 11:—
If the lifeboats attached to davits do not provide accom- modation for all persons on board, or the minimum cubic capacity specified in Column (F) of Table No. 3 whichever is less, additional lifeboats of Class 1 or Class 2 shall be provided to make up the deficiency.
If the boats so provided do not provide accommodation for all persons on board, additional lifeboats of Class 1 or Class 2 or approved life rafts or approved buoyant apparatus shall be provided so that the accommodation provided by the life- boats. life rafts and buoyant apparatus shall be sufficient for all persons on board.
In the case of ships of Class 4 engaged on voyages re- ferred to in sub-paragraph (b) of regulation 11:-
If the lifeboats attached to davits do not provide accom- modation for 80 per cent of the persons on board, or the minimum cubic capacity specified in Column (F) of Table No. 3, whichever is less, additional lifeboats of Class 1 or Class 2 shall be provided to make up the deficiency.
If the boats so provided do not provide accommodation for 80 per cent. of all persons on board, additional lifeboats of Class 1 or Class 2, or approved life rafts, or other approved buoyant apparatus shall be provided so that the accom- modation provided by the lifeboats, life rafts and buoyant apparatus shall be sufficient for 80 per cent of all persons on board.
The stowage of the additional boats shall be decided by the Government Marine Surveyor.
14. MOTOR LIFEBOATS-Where the number of lifeboats carried on a ship is more than 13, one shall be a motor boat, and where the number is more than 19, two shall be motor boats. These motor lifeboats shall be fitted with a wireless telegraph installation and a searchlight.

15. EQUIPMENT FOR LIFEBOATS:-Every lifeboat form- ing part of the statutory life saving appliances of any ship of Group I. Class 4 shall be provided with the full equipment for lifeboats specified in the Instructions except that, subject to the approval of the Government Marine Surveyor, the quantity of condensed milk may be reduced to one-half in the case of ships engaged on voyages referred to in sub- paragraph (a) of regulation 11.
Condensed milk need not be provided as part of the lifeboat equipment in the case of ships engaged on voyages referred to in sub-paragraph (b) of regulation 11.
16. EQUIPMENT FOR LIFE RAFTS:-Every life raft forming part of the statutory life saving appliances of any ship of Group I. Class 4 shall be provided with the full equip- ment for life rafts specified in the Instructions.
17. LIFE-BUOYs:-The minimum number of approved life-buoys with which ships of Group I. Class 4 are to be provided is as follows:--
