GOVERNOR WELCOMES FIRST ARRIVAL
INITIATES SERVICE TO HONGKONG
SIX PASSENGERS
Carrying a full load of six pas- sengers, a China National Airways Corporation flying boat arrived here yesterday at 2.45 p.m. and inaugur- ated the regular service between Shanghai, Hongkong and Canton, It took off again for Canton at 2.40 p.m. after picking up three passen- gers here.
-
His Excellency the Governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott, the Hon. Com- mander G. F. Hole, Director of Air Services, Mr. A. J. R. Moss, Super- intendent of the Airport, and a fair- ly large crowd welcomed the plane on its arrival, and later Mr. Dai Enki, Manager of the C.N.A.C., en- tertained the Governor and a few friends at a cocktail party in the lounge at Kai Tak.
At 2.30 p.m. His Excellency and Commander Hole arrived at the air- port and were welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Moss, who escorted them to the slipway at the water's edge where a full view of the plane's landing could be secured. Before the grey and yellow Douglas Dol- phin flying boat appeared in the south-eastern sky a crowd of over 50 people had gathered.
Cocktail Party
Running right on schedule the plane appeared at 2.40 p.m., circled the airport to come into the wind and landed on the sea just off shore. It was a perfect landing and with a very short run which took the plane right up to the mooring buoy.
The passengers, including Mr. Dai Enki and Mr. Bixby, Far Eastern representative of Pan-American Air- ways, were transported from the plane to the slipway, where the Governor, Commander Hole and a few friends greeted them: The party then went to the lounge where a cocktail party had been ar- ranged by Mr. Eddy of the Penin- sula Hotel for Mr. Dai.
Those present, at the 'party in- cluded Sir Andrew Caldecott, Cap- tain Cragg, Mr. and Mrs. A. Moss, Mr. Nelson, Commander Hole, Hon. Mr. J. J. Paterson, Mr. H. R. But- ters, Mr. Curtis, Mr. Nixon, Mr. Randle, Mr. Y. J. Neyle and Lt. Smith. His Excellency toasted the Chinese Posts, and Mr. Dai respond- ed by toasting the Hongkong Posts.

Williamson, O.B.E., D.S.C., Marine Superintendent at: Shanghai of Messrs. Jardine Mathe- son and Company, Mr. M. Roux, of the Akskania Works, Berlin, Mr. T. M. Wong and Mr. Van.

The three passengers who left here for Canton were Mr. F. A. Pollock, and Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Littig.
Piloting the plane yesterday was Captain C. G. Sellars, one of the C.N.A.C.'s veteran pilots, who has already called in at Hongkong with C.N.A.C. planes nearly a dozen times. "It was quite a routine and "Call- uneventful flight," he said.
ing here makes no real difference to us who pilot the machine except that our scheduled arrival at Can- ton is put back about half an hour." The assistant pilot was Mr. Paul
Chen.
Passengers aboard the plane de- clared that the trip was an excel- lent one and very smooth practical- ly all the way.
Little Mail
Strangely enough philatelists did not seem to be particularly enthu- siastic about sending letters by this first plane, and there were only about ten kilos of mail from Shang- hai for Hongkong. Hongkong sent about 12 lbs. to Canton.
Among those present at the Air- port to welcome the plane were:
His Excellency the Governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott, Captain W. J. R. Cragg, A.D.C. to the Governor, Hon. Commander G. F. Hole, Director of Air Services, Mr. A. J. R. Shanghai Departure
Shanghai, Nov. 5. The first regular Hongkong-bound C.N.A.C. plane departed at 6 a.m. to-day and is due in the Colony at 2.45 p.m.

Airways.-United Press.
Films Aboard
Mr. B. Greenburg was one of the persons most interested in the ar- rival of the plane, for aboard it was the film for "Piccadilly Jim," an M.G.M. production which is due to be shown at the King's Theatre and which would not have arrived here in time had it been sent by ship.
