ASSISTANCE TOWARDS THE COUT OF WIVES PAGSAGNS

39

In East Africa the assistance granted towards the

cost of passages for an officer's family takes the form

of a lump sum approxi ately equivalent to half the cost of a

single passage on the outward voyage and half the cost of e

single pussage on the homeward voyage by the class by

which the officer is entitled to travel.

Under the Colonial Administrative Service Unification

Scaeme the proposul was that "the grant of a lump sum

quivalent to one full passage should be adopted as the

standard minimum assistance to be granted towards the cost

of family passages on first appointment, leave (including

sick leave) and retirement". This is a question which

Falls within the scope of the Committee appointed in 1932

(see Circular despatch of 27th March,1933) to examine the

general question of leave, length of tours, and passes,

in the Colonial Service us a whole. It is not possible

at this stage to anticipate the Committee's final

recommendations but it is unuerstood to be likely that they

will propose that an officer holuing a post in a unified

service, or one of similar status, should receive the same

assistance towarus the cost of his wife's passages as he

hi salf receives

"

viz: a free passage once each way uuring

each tour by the class by which he is entitled to travel.

This recommenuation would be based on the

assumption that married officers will for the most part
