Sir,
I have the honour to refer to your confidential
letter of the 12th October to the Secretary of State, on the
subject of dredging in the vicinity of the Hong Kong and
Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company's piers.
2. In compliance with instructions received from the
Colonial Office, we invited tenders for the dredging work
required, and we addressed a telegram to you yesterday
reading as follows:-
"With reference to your letter of the 12th October to Secretary of State two tenders received Kalis Sons and Company $1,911,600 complete 100 weeks subject to following stipulations (a) Contract to be based on minimum quantity of 1,000,000. cubic yards. (b) Dump at Kun Tong suitable for depositing whole of dredgings by bottom discharge barges at level not higher than 8 ft. below datum. (c) Contractor not liable for local dues or taxes. (d) Tender to be accepted not later than February 1st, 1934. James Dredging Towage and Transport Company $2,124,000 complete 76 weeks covers all ordinary dredging except rock or stones that require man handling from buckets. Copies of tenders with particulars of plant follow to-morrow air mail. Tilbury Contracting and Dredging Company would have tendered if time had permitted representative to visit site."
3. We now enclose copies of the two tenders received,
together with copies of a covering letter dated 15th December
which accompanied Messrs. K.L.Kalis Sons and Company's tender,
and a covering letter dated 13th December from the James
Dredging Towage and Transport Co.Ltd. You will note that
